Piracy vs Time

Times have changed. It definitely has for me.

I’m talking about software piracy. Long gone are the hours if digging through Google results to find that ebook, pdf, roms, “free” software, what have you. Sorting through piles of crap, misspelled files. Navigating through dangerous websites filled with trojan and viral landmines. Nope. Those days are over for me.

I’m not a rich man, but if paying 500, 2000, 3000 yen gets me what I want/need instantly and hassle-free, that’s where I’m going. The other day on Facebook, someone asked “Where can I download good ebooks?” His question implicitly means “Where can I download good ebooks FOR FREE?”, and I understood that. But my mind instantly answers “Amazon”. Or maybe you know, the author’s original page, where people nowadays generally have a Paypal button and download link ready.

There are some time where I am tempted to go through the piracy motions. But in those times I catch myself and think: Maybe I don’t need that <mp3 / app / OS upgrade>. If I can’t afford or willing to pay for it, then do I truly need it? And if I do need it, then how come I’m not willing to trade money for it?

Maybe I’m jaded. Maybe I’m out of touch with the common Indonesian man. Maybe I’ve outgrown my habits as a poor student. I would like to think I’ve realized I’ve moved on, and starting to figure out what my time is actually worth.

Blackberry Playbook - Error 3001 Solution

I got a Blackberry Playbook recently, and on booting it I kept getting the “Could not activate this tablet. (3001)” error. Through guides from various sources, I managed to find the following steps worked for me. Hopefully this guide will be helpful for someone else.

Download and Install the Blackberry Desktop Software.
Turn off your Playbook.
Open the BDS, and connect the Playbook to the USB. (Note: the Playbook must be OFF, or it won’t detect it)
A pop-up (with 3 options) will show up indicating that it can’t connect to the Playbook. Leave it as it is for now.
Hard reset the Playbook. (Press volume up, volume down, and the power button simultaneously and hold for around 15 seconds.)
After it resets, click “Repair” from the previous pop-up. (I’m using OSX, from the places I read, this option could be “Update” for Windows)
It should scan the Playbook and asks if you want to update it. Select YES.
If everything is done right so far, it should be downloading and updating something. It took me around 30 minutes or so until it finished.
Disconnect the Playbook and turn it ON.
You will have to go through the steps of setting the time, Blackberry ID, etc.
After entering the WiFi settings, previously it will give the 3001 error. Now it’ll update (yet again) for a file around 30mb.
Voila! It works.
(Optional) Update Tetris and Need For Speed Underground (this game is still around??).

See? It just works!
